Resolution

  • 2400 dpi, compression to 300 dpi. “Automatic”
  • Compression preferred or JPEG-Maximum Quality
  • LW files — 72 resolution (dots per mm) or Minimum 2000 dpi
  • CT files — 12 resolution (dots per mm) or 300 dpi at 100% size

Proofs — Required Proofing

  • Please supply 1 composite proof for color (any SWOP® approved digital proof such as Kodak Approval or Digital Matchprint).
  • For a complete up-to date listing of SWOP® approved color proofs please visit: www.swop.org/certification.html.
  • One ruled blueline/color laser for positioning. Proofs must be made from the supplied file.
  • All proofs should contain a color bar with an exposure element that is pulled from the supplied file.
  • A hard copy proof at 100% size must be provided for each digital file. Proofs must be SWOP® certified.
  • The proof should indicate the proofing product or system used, prepress supplier contacts, and information showing
    conformance to the manufacturer’s Application Data.
  • Ads should be proofed on Publication grade stock.
  • For proofing systems requiring line screen — Use 133 line
  • The color and quality of print reproduction may vary if the above proofing guidelines are not met.
  • Proofs that aren’t SWOP® compliant will be referenced for content only. Meredith will try to achieve a reasonable match to the supplied file.

Color Bars

  • There should be a color bar on all analog or digital halftone proofs.
  • Color bars should include a solid and 25%, 50%, and 75% tints of each process color; solid overprints and at least one gray balance patch (cyan – 50%, magenta & yellow – 39%).
  • Two-color overprints at 25%, 50% and 75% are also recommended.
  • The color bar can be a manufacturer’s color control guide, a GCA/GATF Proof Comparator, or a GATF/SWOP Proofing Bar, or digital equivalence.

General Overall Guidelines

  • Single page ads should be built to 100% trim size. If ad bleeds, extend bleed a minimum of 1/8" beyond trim.
  • Partial page ads should be built to 100% of their actual trim size. If ad bleeds, extend bleed a minimum of 1/8" beyond trim.
  • All Non-Bleed ads should be built to 100% of the Non-Bleed specs
  • Standard trim, bleed & center marks should be included but not in the “live” image area.
  • All elements must be placed at 100% of size.
  • Use stylized fonts. Do not apply style attributes to basic fonts.
  • Include all fonts, images/scans, logos/artwork.
  • Do not nest EPS files in other EPS files
  • On 4/C Ads, Pantone colors must be converted to CMYK.
  • Font information should include manufacturer, font name and version.
  • Four color solids should not exceed SWOP® density of 300%.
  • 100% black elements should be knocked-out & trapped or overprint with a rich black using 100% K and 60% C.
  • Supply one composite LW and CT file.
  • Supply hard copy proofs that match each supplied digital file.
  • Proofs must be provided at 100% of size.
  • Reverse type & line art should not be less than .007 at the thinnest part of the character. Single color type should be no less than .004 at the thinnest part of the character.

Rotogravure process is used for all full run national ads, except covers, split runs and units with special non-process colors. A 5% minimum dot is required to print the highlight areas & square-up on edges. Fade off dot is 3%.
